Interference Series pearlescent pigments are covered with rutile titanium dioxide. By precisely controlling the thickness of the titanium dioxide coating, it is possible to produce colorful variations of gold, orange, red, violet, blue and green.
This color variation is due to the physical phenomenon of optical interference, in which the difference in optical range between the reflected light of titanium dioxide with a high refractive index and the reflected light of mica with a low refractive index produces an interference that results in the display of different colors.

Interference Pearlescent Pigment Industry knowledge

Why Does the Water Resistance of Interference Pearlescent Pigments Make Them Perform Exceptionally Well in Many Applications?
The water resistance of interference pearlescent pigments contributes significantly to their exceptional performance in many applications. Here are the key reasons why their water resistance is so beneficial:
Interference pearlescent pigments' resistance to water ensures that they maintain their integrity and visual properties even when exposed to high humidity or direct contact with water. This is crucial for products used in environments where moisture is prevalent, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor settings.
The primary appeal of interference pearlescent pigments lies in their unique optical effects, such as iridescence and color shifting. Water resistance helps preserve these effects over time, preventing degradation that could occur due to water exposure. This stability is essential for maintaining the high-quality appearance of the final product.
Water resistance makes these pigments suitable for a wide range of applications:
Cosmetics: In products like creams, lotions, and makeup, where contact with water is frequent, water-resistant pigments ensure that the product’s visual appeal and performance remain unaffected.
Automotive Coatings: Vehicles are regularly exposed to rain, car washes, and environmental moisture. Water-resistant pigments help maintain the vehicle’s glossy, color-shifting finish, enhancing both aesthetics and longevity.
Packaging: In packaging materials, especially those used for high-end goods or perishables, water resistance ensures that the packaging retains its attractive appearance and structural integrity despite exposure to moisture.
In water-based paints and coatings, pigments must disperse well and remain stable without reacting adversely to the water in the system. The inherent water resistance of interference pearlescent pigments ensures they do not degrade, clump, or change in any undesirable way, leading to consistent performance and appearance.
Products incorporating water-resistant pigments benefit from an extended lifespan due to the reduced risk of pigment degradation. This durability translates into cost savings over time, as products do not need to be replaced or maintained as frequently.
For outdoor applications, such as architectural coatings and outdoor furniture, water resistance is vital for protecting the pigments from the damaging effects of rain and humidity. This protection helps maintain the vibrant and dynamic appearance of surfaces treated with interference pearlescent pigments, even under harsh weather conditions.

What factors affect the color durability of interference pearlescent pigments?
The color durability of interference pearlescent pigments is affected by a variety of factors, which will be reflected in different applications and environmental conditions. The following are the main factors that affect the color durability of interference pearlescent pigments:
Ultraviolet (UV) light: Prolonged exposure to UV light will cause many pigments to photodegrade. The titanium dioxide coating in interference pearlescent pigments has good UV resistance, but long-term strong UV exposure may still cause gradual fading of color or weakening of optical effects.
High temperature exposure: Although interference pearlescent pigments have good thermal stability, at extremely high temperatures, especially when the temperature exceeds its stable range, the pigment may undergo thermal decomposition or chemical changes, affecting its color and gloss.
Temperature fluctuations: Frequent temperature changes may cause thermal expansion and contraction of the pigment material, which in turn affects its structural integrity and optical effects.
High humidity: An environment with high humidity may cause hydrolysis or other chemical reactions of certain components in the pigment, affecting its color stability.
Water contact: Although interference pearlescent pigments generally have good water resistance, long-term immersion in water or frequent water contact may still affect its durability, especially in poor water quality (such as acidic or alkaline water).
Acid-base environment: Contact with strong acid or alkali will damage the chemical structure of interference pearlescent pigments, resulting in color change or reduced gloss.
Chemical solvents: Certain organic solvents may dissolve or corrode the surface coating of the pigment, affecting its optical effect and color durability.
Friction and wear: When used in an environment with high friction or frequent wear, the surface of the interference pearlescent pigment may be physically damaged, resulting in reduced gloss and color change.
